Yarmouth driver’s leg, 70, stuck in car frame – Boston News, Weather, Sports

YARMOUTH, MASS. (WHDH) – A man in his 60s is in hospital after his car rolled forward which trapped his leg between the wheel and the car frame.

The Yarmouth Fire Department was notified at 5:21 a.m. Wednesday of a person whose leg was trapped between the steering wheel and the frame of a car at Seagull Beach in West Yarmouth. Crews found a man on the ground with his ankle and foot embedded in the front wheel arch of a sedan and stuck behind the tire on arrival. The man, who was the driver of the vehicle, thought the car was parked when he exited the vehicle. The vehicle had rolled forward, grabbed the man’s foot and pinned him in the wheel arch.

“As the car moves forward, we don’t know exactly how his foot got wrapped in there, but it appeared to be lifted up and stuck between the wheel well and the tire,” the fire department captain said. of Yarmouth, Kevin Huck. . “It’s sort of training him.”

Crews quickly organized a plan to extract the man without causing further injury. Wooden wedges were used to stabilize the car as staff slowly deflated the tire and lifted the car with airbags at the same time, leaving enough room to remove the man’s foot.

“I don’t know how he managed to do that,” said beachgoer Diane Gallagher. “I looked at the photo and I said, ‘How did he do that? On purpose?'”

“It’s amazing how they react to crazy situations and come out and know what to do and have taken care of him, so I applaud the firefighters,” said fellow beachgoer Pamela Galgay.

The person is being treated at Cape Cod Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to make a full recovery.

“The guys did a great job when evaluating him; they came up with a plan, they had a little chat, they implemented the plan and it worked really well,” Huck said.

The fire department credits a private ambulance crew who was nearby and called in the event of an emergency.
