SPRINGFIELD — Amid the rush for new technology, Illinois officials are announcing an updated version of an old favorite: the folded road map.

On Thursday, the Illinois Department of Transportation announced the release of the new official Illinois road map. In addition to route updates, the map includes a new feature that displays mileage between cities and marked junctions to help people plan their trips in Illinois.

“While many of us now use smartphones for directions, paper maps remain an important resource,” said Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman.

“When your phone breaks down or you drive out of range, paper maps will show you the way,” he said. “Plus, they provide valuable information about our excellent condition to help you get the most out of your travels.”

The cover of the new map features a beautiful photo of the Capitol building in the fall. The photograph won IDOT’s employee card cover competition, submitted by Andrew Bolinger, an office assistant.

For those with a smartphone, the QR codes printed on the maps provide easy access to information on the IDOT’s site for getting around Illinois for travel conditions, Amtrak, and the Office’s Enjoy Illinois campaign. tourism, as well as historic sites and parks of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. .

Published by IDOT every two years, the official Illinois road map is paid for with Federal Highway Administration funds and is printed on recycled paper with soybean oil-based inks.
