RICHMOND, Va. — You can help Richmond elementary school teachers get fun learning tools for their students by attending a fun gala this Saturday, July 9.
Turn on the RPSa new organization dedicated to helping teachers in Richmond, is hosting the gala fundraiser.
Ignite raises funds to help teachers buy school supplies. Not only markers and crayons, but also fun and educational toys and games that would otherwise come out of teachers’ pockets.
Teachers set up Amazon wish lists of up to $250, then Ignite buys the items for them and brings them to their classroom.
Ashley Greene, who was named Teacher of the Year 2022, was one of the lucky recipients of papers for her class at Overby-Sheppard last year.
“It just gave me a warm feeling inside just to see their eyes light up and then go, like, just want to touch everything,” Greene said. “Like it wasn’t Christmas, but it felt like Christmas.”
Among the fun new things students got to learn with were a math and language hopscotch game and little phones that helped them pronounce books out loud.
Teachers are currently selected by Sarah Hunter, RPS Teacher Liaison, who takes recommendations from principals and other administrators based on who they believe are in need and most deserving. But, by next school year, they plan to have a formal application process in place and want to support two to three teachers a month.
The Ignite RPS Summer Gala begins at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Hoffheimer Building in Scott’s Addition.
The adults-only event will feature live music and a DJ, a photo booth and raffle prizes worth $2,000 ranging from local artwork to a meal cooked by a private chef for of them. They also plan to auction off surprise items once the raffles are over.
Cocktail attire or black tie is recommended and there will be a full cash bar and complimentary appetizers.
Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Teachers will only have to pay $5 or less for admission, and the first 10 teachers at the door get in free.
You can find more information about the event on their instagram. If you can’t attend the gala, but still want to donate, you can do so through their website.
