Paper Moon explores the intersection of artifice and landscape. This photographic series, taken on local film sets, depicts the quiet rest of days without filming when props and faux scenery elements are at rest. Devoid of the lighting techniques and camera angles intended to mediate the viewer’s experience, these objects take on a different life. Their ephemeral nature is exposed and the footprints of the craftsmen who shaped them stand out.

Alberta’s landscapes have attracted countless film and television productions, many of which have operated near the Leighton Art Centre. The natural landscape in the background often has the essential role of giving authenticity to a story. With many productions having historical content, the landscape is bound to appear in films as untouched by modern life as possible. Meanwhile, fleets of heavy machinery and high-tech equipment lurk behind the camera. Hundreds of workers lend their skills as artificial terrains and entire temporary cities are built. The ultimate achievement of the goal is narrative control.

In this exhibition, the intended illusion is shattered by the artist’s camera. The photographs were created with 120mm Rolleiflex and Hasselblad cameras, a slow process that lacks immediacy.

Stacey Watson is an artist and educator from Mohkinstsis/Calgary. Her work has embraced sculptural installation, collaborative performance and printmaking as well as lens-based practice in video and photography.

This exhibition was created with the support of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.
