Egypt inaugurates the 11th edition of the Luxor African Film Festival

The eleventh edition of the Luxor African Film Festival kicked off Saturday on the banks of the Nile in Luxor Governorate, Upper Egypt, inaugurated by Culture Minister Enas Abdel-Dayem and Luxor Governor Mostafa Alham , in the presence of the Minister of Culture.

Festival delegations, teams and guests gathered in their distinctive traditional attire, bringing a festive atmosphere to the occasion as they were transported via Nile ferries to the conference hall.

They were greeted by the red carpet initially reserved for the stars of the opening ceremony and African filmmakers.

The Luxor African Film Festival (LAFF) pays tribute to the deceased Senegalese director Djibril Diop Mambéty and awards the iconic star Hussein Fahmy the “Lifetime Achievement Award”.

The event runs from March 4-10. 35 countries participate in the edition of Djibril Mambéty, 45 films participate in four competitions.

LAFF also dedicates its eleventh edition to Egyptian actors Huda Sultan and Mahmoud Moursy and Moroccan director Mohamed Ismail.

It also honors Egyptian actor Amr Saad, Burkinabe filmmaker Apolline Traoré, Algerian artist Biyouna and Tunisian director Férid Boughedir.

Uganda was chosen as the guest country of honour.

The event also offers a special program for local audience development and talent support in Upper Egypt.

LAFF is also presenting eight artistic workshops this year: “Film making” by Ahmed Rashwan, “Cinema for children” by Shwikar Khalifa, “Preparing actors” by Al-Asaad Al-Jamousi, “Film posters (old – new) by Zainab Soubhi, “Making Heritage Boats” by Saeed Al-Bagouri, “Theatrical Storytelling Workshop for Women” by Eman Shahin, “Wall Drawing Contest” by Dr. Ahmed Hamdi and “Children’s Drawing Contest” by Wael Nour.

In addition, LAFF will also organize three art exhibitions: “Photographic Exhibition – Tutankhamun”, “Visual Artists Exhibition” and “Laureate Poster Exhibition”.
