5 Images … Of Scheveningen Strand beach on Kodak Portra 160 (Canon A-1 + Canon FDn 50mm f / 1.8)

There are few things more enjoyable than a day at the beach in good company and in bright sunshine. I hope these 5 images will convey this feeling of warmth both literally and figuratively.

During one of the last weeks of August my group of friends and I decided to walk down from Delft to Scheveningen Strand, one of the most popular beaches in the Netherlands. Having recently returned to the Netherlands for my studies, it was a good return to normal after a summer of traveling with the family.

I bring with me my Canon A-1 and one of my favorite fixed focal length lenses, the 50mm FDn f / 1.8. When I bought the A-1 a few months ago it came with the 50mm as a kit lens, the original intention to replace my lack of budget at the time prevented me and I found myself liking the smaller look of a 50mm. Unfortunately, opening auto mode on the lens failed, so I used the A-1 entirely manually, which feels like missing a lot of its lens as one of the first automatic exposure cameras.

Of course, a sunny beach near sunset was the perfect environment to try out a Kodak Portra 160 for the first time. Normally rivaling Portra, I decided to splash out to preserve one of the last days of summer in the prettiest way possible. As always, Portra’s superb dynamic range really helped capture both the subjects and the brighter sky behind them, in combination with the crisp, contrasting colors that produced some of my favorite images I’ve taken so far. now. Everything was shot at box speed with the film developed by Photo van der Graaf in Rotterdam and scanned on their Fuji Frontier SP-3000.

As the day slowly faded until sunset, the light was perfect for me to start filming. Everyone that day seemed to soak up the warm aura of the last moments of the sun and provided me with beautiful subjects to capture. The various structures lying around provided me with good tools for framing and composition and really help give me the signature look of the beach.
